Mobile Phones and Workplace Security

Posted on August 31st, 2005

TechWorld’s article points out new issues facing management due to increased popularity of mobile phones – “mini-PC”. It is expected that more than a third of the company-installed base will use the mini-PCs by 2008.

Some of the issues that management needs to start thinking about:

Identify mobile device management approach.
Focus on protecting any device that has sensitive data or content and it is considered to be a company asset.

Develop mobile policies.
Define ways to manage employees’ personal use of their mobile devices which includes picture sharing, game downloads, and access to inappropriate content.

Investigate anti-spam and anti-virus capabilities protection.
Operators are able to block most Short Message Service spam, but the onus will increasingly spread to the company with the broadening of message quantity and type. Also within the next 12 to 18 months a device-based virus protection will become a necessity for any operating system-based phone.

Develop a key point of contact at the carrier.
Identify a contact person or a team should a mobile security breach or loss of data occur.
