California Launches Mandatory Cell Phone Recycling Program
California is the first state mandating a cell phone recycling program.
A new law going into effect July 1st, 2006 requires cell phone retailers within California boarders to setup a collection and recycling program for mobile phones.
The new law AB2901 also bans all California residents from throwing old cell phones in the trash.
According to PR Newswire, there are over 500 million used cell phones in the U.S. sitting idle in desk drawers or in landfills, with another 130 million estimated to be added in 2006.
