Linux groups defining mobile standards

Posted on August 14th, 2006

Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Linux Phone Standards (LIPS) Forum have a plan to collaborate on the definition of requirements and specifications for Linux-based mobile devices.

OSDL will handle the Linux operating system and kernel, where LIPS will be responsible for applications programming interface and services.

Members of both companies will share their requirements and specifications by attending each other’s meetings to facilitate communication in an effort to jointly generat these artifacts. Such an approach is seen as a preventer to the creation of a duplicate effort and even worse creating a market segmentation.

Linux is emerging as an inexpensive alternative to some of the proprietary operating systems for mobile devices, Microsoft Windows Mobile, and Symbian OS.

The whole initiative between OSDL and LIPS is wrapped in a benefits message about the cost savings, technology, enhancements, and flexibility
