Two Types of Windows Mobile

Posted on December 9th, 2006

According to Brighthand, there are two different types of Windows Mobile used in Smarthphones. There are differences between them, so the end user purchasing a smartphone should understand which operating system he/she is buying.

It is hard to tell by just looking at the phone which version comes with the unit, since most smartphones have the Windows Mobile logo.

The two diferent types of Windows Mobile:

  • Windows Mobile for Pocket PC (Cingular 3125, Motorola Q, Samsung BlackJack, and T-Mobile Dash)
  • Pocket PC (Cingular 8125, Cingular 8525, HP iPAQ hw6500/hw6900, Treo 700w/wx, Treo 750v, and Verizon VX6700)

The Windows Mobile for Pocket PC was specifically created for smaller phones and have been designed around features that can be used with one hand and do not use touchscreen. Smartphones with Windows Mobile for Pocket PC do not include Office Mobile, but many of them come with ClearVue suite. ClearVue allows read-only access to Microsoft Documents.

The Pocket PC are the only Windows Mobile devices that come with Office Mobile. Office Mobile allows the user full control over the Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
