T-Mobile Q2 Results

T-Mobile USA today announced its second-quarter results, showing increase in profits but a slight decrease in adding new customers.

Second quarter results:

  • 972,000 net new customers added in Q2 2005 – total customer base of 19.2 million. (1,092,000 in the second quarter of 2004.)
  • Revenue of $3.04 billion, up from $2.46 billion Q2 a year ago
  • Net Income (profit) of $387 million, up more than 60% from Q2 2004
  • Average Revenue Per User of $54, down from $55 the same quarter the year before
  • Average cost of acquiring a customer $310, down from $318 Q2 last year

T-Mobile also added over 1,000 new cell sites on air in Q2 2005 which makes for a total of almost 31,000 cell sites on air.

Opera Mini Java Moble Browser

Opera Software, a Norwegian browser owner, have announced Opera Mini, a J2ME (Java 2 Mobile Edition) Web browser for “virtually all mobile phones”.

The new browser enables web access on more than 700 million low to mid-tier Java-capable phones around the world. Opera’s attempt is to bring mobile browsing capability to the majority of mobile users.

“Mobile Web surfing has until now been limited to more advanced phones that are capable of running a browser,” says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software.

LG has launched the U8210

LG Electronics has launched their first 3G/UMTS device, the U8210, using Bitfone’s mProve technology for FOTA. FOTA, firmware over-the-air upgrade technology allows wireless network operators to diagnose, service and enhance mobile devices remotely.

The technology is used by the following device and chipset manufacturers:

  • Sony Ericsson
  • QUALCOMM

  • UTStarcom

Sprint and Nextel are Planning to Close the Deal on Friday

According to Business Week, Sprint has a plan to close the $70 billion Sprint – Nextel merger on Friday. Sprint is ready to move forward with the deal despite the legal challenge from Alamos Holdings, Sprint’s largest wireless affiliate.

Nokia Mobile Search and Free Application

Nokia announced a new mobile search application, which provides mobile access to leading and local search engines.

Integrated service and content providers:

  • Fonecta
  • Medio Systems
  • Yahoo!
  • Yell.com
  • NAVTEQ

The mobile search application is currently available in the UK, Finland and Sweden. It will be distributed as the standard feature of the Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681 and Nokia 6630 smartphones. Existing owners of any of the three smartphones can download the search application for free.

Consolidation of Mobile Softwre Market

Frontline Solutions reported that Sybase is buying Extended Systems for an estimated $71.3 million. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2005, pending approvals. Sybase has a plan to integrate Extended Systems into its iAnywhere Solutions mobile software subsidiary.

“The acquisition of Extended Systems is expected to enhance our portfolio of mobile middleware solutions and strengthen our geographic presence, particularly in Europe,” said Sybase’s chairman, president, and CEO John Chen. “This acquisition will position Sybase with a powerful end-to-end information mobility offering that, when combined with our industry leading mobile database and mobile device management products, will enable Sybase to be in a great position to deliver on the benefits of the unwired enterprise.”

At the same time, MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc., was purchsed by Vista Equity Partners, a private investment firm based in San Francisco.
